The results of the FastPass project were assessed on the land, air and sea borders Two ABC gates from two different manufacturers were used in the demonstration at Vienna Airport, allowing the comparison of different solutions. Automated border checks of the future under examination Automated border checks have become more common at European airports. The equipment used and their operating principles differ from each other, how-ever, which makes their use difficult for travellers. Indeed, the operating prin-ciples of the automated border checks should be harmonised, states the Fast- Pass research project. The project tested automated border checks at airports, but also for the first time on cruise ships 49 RAJAMME VARTIJAT and in the lane-based checks of vehicles at land borders. The four-year FastPass project (FastPass: A Harmonized, Modular Reference System for all European Au-tomatic Border Crossing Points) will end in March 2017. The equipment and concepts developed were tested at three border crossing points. The air border testing was performed at Vienna Airport in Austria, and the land border testing was performed at the Moravita border crossing point in Romania. With regard to the sea border, the project con-centrated on cruise ships in the Port of Piraeus in Greece. The FastPass project was launched at the beginning of 2013. The multi-discipline project involved 27 partners from 8 different countries.
